Introduction to class:
Throughout
2nd grade, students will be mastering the skills they have learned in
1st grade, as well as, begin to develop the skills needed for 3rd
grade. Second graders will be reading stories from the Houghton Mifflin
reading series, along with meeting in Guided Reading groups to read
books at their specific reading level. When reading, students are
practicing their fluency and expression, while also reading for
understanding. Language is another part of the 2nd grade day. We use
the 6-Traits Writing model to create a solid paragraph with a topic
sentence and detail sentences, while also working on correct
capitalization, punctuation and word choice. We also spend time using
the Everyday Math series to further develop math skills. Second graders
will work to master the basic addition and subtraction facts through 18,
counting money, telling time to the 5-minute intervals, and problem
solving. During the school year, 2nd graders have an opportunity to
explore areas of science using the Einstein Science Kits. We observe
the life cycle of a painted lady butterfly, discover the moon, and
experiment with soils. Social studies begins with a focus on
communities and then progresses to cities, states, countries, continents
and oceans. Along with all of our learning, we also have lots of fun in
second grade!
