Teachers: Mary Claerbaut - Dawn Egan - Kris Sass - Katie Loose Reading & Language Arts We use the LEAD 21 reading series and a guided reading program in first grade. LEAD 21 emphasizes phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and differentiated reading instruction. LEAD 21 is a leveled reading program that is individualized to meet the needs of each student. Throughout the year, we integrate a variety of writing activities emphasizing the 6 traits of writing. Students will begin using correct punctuation, spelling and capitalization. Spelling is part of our LEAD 21 reading series. Weekly spelling sheets will come home. Students should study the list at home and be prepared for a weekly spelling test on Friday. Students will also be expected to use correct spelling in their daily writing. Math We use the Everyday Mathematics series to guide our instruction. Everyday Mathematics is based on the idea the children build understanding and develop skills as a result of many meaningful and connected learning experiences. It provides a hands-on approach to basic math skills. The first grade program emphasizes the following content:
Social Studies In social studies we focus on Humanities (families, friends, getting along, basic needs & wants), Geography (neighborhoods, schools, maps, & citizenship), and holidays. Students will also be reading Scholastic News magazines to encourage students' interested in current events. Science We explore 4 different science kits throughout the year. The units covered are solids/liquids, organisms, weather and the Sun. Other themes that are discussed in 1st grade are: plants and animals, Earth’s treasures, magnets, 5 senses, water and air, health and safety. We adapt a fun, hands on approach to learning science! Homework Daily folders will come home with your child. Inside you will find information, your child's work, and homework. Your cooperation at home is needed for your child to become a successful learner. Please do the homework with your child and send it back to school.
We are looking forward to working with you to ensure that your child has a successful year in first grade!
