Teachers: Mary Claerbaut - Dawn Egan - Kris Sass - Katie Loose Reading & Language Arts We use the Open Court reading series and a guided reading program in first grade. The Open Court Reading Series emphasizes phonics. Guided reading is a leveled reading program that is individualized to meet the needs of each student. Zaner Bloser manuscript is the accepted form of penmanship. Penmanship sheets will be introduced to ensure proper handwriting. Math We use The Everyday Math Series. It provides a hands-on approach to everyday math skills. Throughout the year, a variety of math skills are introduced. For example counting: by 2's, 5's, 10's, time, money, addition, subtracting, even and odd numbers, using a calculator, 2-3 digit numbers, Place value, tally marks, greater than and less than, and knowing telephone number and address. Social Studies In social studies we focus on families, schools, neighborhoods and basic needs and wants in a community. We are also beginning to use maps and globes. The Weekly Reader is shared to encourage students' interested in current events. Science We have adopted the Einstein project as part of our science curriculum. Four times a year, a science kit is delivered to our classroom and for two months we explore the kit. It is a fun hands-on approach to learning more science. The units covered are solids, liquids, organisms, weather and the sun. Other themes that are discussed in 1st grade are: plants and animals, magnets, senses, water and air, health and safety. Homework Daily folders come home with you child. Inside you will find information, your child's work and homework. Your cooperation at home is needed for your child to become a successful learner.
